Senior Peer Support is able to provide support to Comox Valley seniors because of the incredible contingent of caring, generous volunteers who make this happen. We currently have more than 60 volunteers, most of them seniors, who volunteer their time in a number of different programs. In our Friendly Visiting program a volunteer visits ‘their’ senior once each week for about an hour each time. The Support Groups for Caregivers we run are facilitated by volunteers, as is our Bowling Respite Program. Our Senior Information and Access Support (SIAS) program, also run by volunteers, helps seniors with forms, applications for benefits they may be eligible for, as well as many other difficult situations that a senior may find themselves in they want support in sorting out. Finally, in our Transit Ambassador program, volunteers help seniors learn how to use the local bus system. Our volunteers are busy!
We also have volunteers who work with us on a short-term basis doing research , short projects and office work.
Our Board of Directors is a ‘working board’. This means they volunteer their time supporting clients in a number of our programs as well as occasionally helping with reception and office tasks. They, along with our Manager, keep the financials of the Society current, plan for new programs and evaluate the effectiveness of existing ones, and generally provide oversight and support for the daily operations of the Society.
The Society cannot operate without its volunteers and we are lucky to have so many really great people involved. If you would like to join us as a volunteer, give us a call at 250 871 5940 – we would love to hear from you.
