Our Work

Comox Valley Senior Support provides support to Comox Valley seniors who are experiencing isolation and loneliness, or who are feeling vulnerable due to challenging situations they face or endure. The majority of our programs and services are delivered by screened, trained volunteers – many of them seniors themselves.

Our Friendly Visiting program offers weekly visiting to a lonely senior. A suitable volunteer visits a senior in their home for about an hour each week. The focus of the visit is the senior being visited. This means that if the senior needs someone to talk to the volunteer listens and supports. If the senior wishes to play cards, be read to, or go for a walk for example, the volunteer obliges. We try to help in meaningful ways.

Caregiver Support offers information and support for caregivers. We have monthly support support groups for caregivers as well as one-to-one emotional support.

Our Memory Support Group meets bi-weekly for a two hour period and is intended for seniors who are living with memory loss. The group focuses on conversation, information, and having fun.

Our Senior Information and Access Support program (SIAS) helps seniors navigate systems of varying kinds. This can include dealing with the frustration of automated telephone answering systems, completing a web-based application, assisting with a paper-based application, and generally helping seniors access information and resources they may be eligible for. The SIAS program also works with other relevant service providers to assist seniors with housing related issues.

The Transit Ambassador program helps seniors learn how to use the CV public transit system. Often simply understanding how to use the bus schedule is all a senior needs but we will also help a senior learn about the logistics of taking a bus.

Information and Referral – we have information about almost anything that may be relevant to a senior. Just ask. We may be able to help.

Respect, trust, practical support and confidentiality are hallmarks of our work.
